Team Play. The Drama of Every Match
ATPL’s format delivers nonstop action where every game counts and every point matters. Originally developed by the Arizona Pickleball Players League (APPL), this scoring system has proven so effective that many leagues across the country are now copying it. Matches unfold in three rounds, and the score is often tight after each—setting up the final games of Round Three as thrilling swing moments. Sometimes it even comes down to the pair that isn’t the team’s strongest; by scoring just six points in a loss, they can earn that one extra team point and become the heroes of the match. It’s a format that keeps play competitive, inclusive, and unforgettable—ensuring that every player has the chance to make a difference.

Team Structure
Teams typically include 10–14 players, led by a Captain and Co-Captain. Captains manage rosters for each match, enter scores, coordinate communication, and handle venue logistics. Players must meet the age requirement by the end of the calendar year of the season (their Pickleball Age). Players skill ratings must be at the flight skill level or below (local league rules may vary the allowable below skill level restrictions depending on their situation. Players may not have a skill rating higher than the flight skill level.).
The Match Format - Every Game Counts – Every Point Matters
Each team brings 6 players (3 pairs), plus a scorekeeper and a substitute (just in case). The 3 pairs from each team play 2 games against all 3 pairs from the opposing team—so each pair competes in 6 games per match. Each game won earns your team 2 Team Points, while a loss with at least 6 points scored still earns 1 Team Point. The team with the most Team Points at the end of all games wins the match.
